Transcom Technology is the first integrated component manufacturer of microwave semiconductors in Taiwan. It holds a unique position as the only company in Taiwan with expertise in both defense microwave components and military compound semiconductor technologies. The company's processes include semiconductor wafer design, manufacturing, and the design of microwave component circuits for packaging and assembly. Over its 25-year history, Transcom Technology has overcome initial skepticism and financial challenges to become a key technology provider for Taiwan's Sky Bow missile production, receiving certification from the defense sector.
Chairman Zhang described Transcom Technology as a "small sparrow with all its vital organs intact," emphasizing its comprehensive capabilities, from IC design to product manufacturing and customer service. He highlighted the importance of continuous research and development for sustaining the company's growth. Currently, the company is actively involved in the research and development of Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology and commercial 5G applications. Chairman Zhang stressed that GaN's significance extends beyond commercial applications, with its true importance lying in military use, an area where both the United States and China are heavily investing.
Addressing the challenges of the military market, Chairman Zhang pointed out that it is a closed market with high technological barriers, a long adoption period, and susceptibility to government policies. He cautioned about the potential pitfalls in the industry and shared some of the setbacks he faced during his academic journey, such as initial exam failures and challenges during his Ph.D. at UCLA. He encouraged the audience to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth and to proactively find solutions to problems.
Chairman Zhang, an alumnus of NCKU, graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a master's degree in 1969. He is also recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus of NCKU for the academic year 110. His return to the university for the lecture allowed him to interact with students and share his experiences, answering questions with his characteristic concise and straightforward style, bringing laughter to the audience.
October 20 also marked the conclusion of the first "Semiconductor Trends and Process Equipment Theory and Practice Training Course." Deputy Director Hui-Hsiang Hsu of the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Regional Branch of the Ministry of Labor attended the closing ceremony. She expressed the hope that each participant would apply the skills learned in the course to their future careers. Chairman Zhang, in his remarks, inspired the trainees to explore their future careers actively.
Chairman Zhang, who founded Transcom Technology in 1998 after returning from Silicon Valley in the United States, has been actively contributing to his alma mater. He donates annually to support talent cultivation at NCKU and provides scholarships to encourage students. His lecture on October 20 aimed to inspire the trainees of the first semiconductor pre-employment training course in Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan. The course concluded with plans for two more classes in the 112th academic year, starting in November, to meet the demand for semiconductor industry talent.
The "Master Lecture Series" aims to bring industry leaders to NCKU to share observations on the latest industry trends and personal career development stories. Since its launch in 2022, the series has received positive feedback. Speakers from companies such as ASE Holdings, Yageo, Himax Technologies, Merck Taiwan, Delta Electronics, CTCI, Winfoundry, and Winbond.
On October 20th, Chairman Quan-Sheng Zhang of Transcom Technology, a manufacturer of defense-grade power amplifiers (PAs), was invited to deliver a lecture at the Xun-Hui Lecture Hall of NCKU. This event marked the first joint "Industry Master Lecture" organized by the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Branch of the Ministry of Labor's Workforce Development Agency and the Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing at NCKU.
During the lecture, Vice Dean Wei-Chou Hsu of Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing at NCKU (on the right) presented Chairman Zhang with the "Industry-Academia Innovation Lecture" recognition.
On October 20, it was also the graduation day for the first "Semiconductor Trends and Process Equipment Theory and Practice Training Course." Deputy Director Hui-Hsiang Hsu of the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Regional Branch of the Ministry of Labor (on the right) attended the event in person. She expressed her hope that each participant would apply the skills learned in the course to their work and thanked Chairman Zhang for inspiring the participants in their future career exploration.
Chairman Zhang of Transcom Technology is an alumnus of the NCKU, having graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1967 and earned his master's degree in 1969. He is also recognized as an outstanding alum of NCKU for the year 2021. On the 20th, he returned to his alma mater to give a speech. During the Q&A session, Chairman Zhang answered every question from the younger students, and his concise and straightforward style of response brought laughter to the audience.
