2023 成材產業論壇 spotlights human existence in the environment, focusing on green energy tech and the new economy.
The grand 8th edition of the "成材產業論壇" at NCKU took place on the afternoon of the 10th. This year's forum, themed "Sustainable Energy Transformation and the New Economy: Innovative Development in Green Energy Technology," featured five experts deeply involved in the field of green energy and industry leaders. They led discussions exploring energy technologies such as fuel cells, hydrogen energy, wind energy, nuclear fusion, and perovskite cells, as well as Taiwan's and international development trends. The forum aimed to encourage more people to care about the energy industry and the overall human living environment.
The 成材論壇, co-hosted by the Alumni Association of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering since 2015, has been held annually in November, coinciding with the university's anniversary month. This event, now in its 8th year, has become a significant activity for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering to celebrate the university's birthday. This year's forum, focusing on global concerns about green energy, saw a large number of registrations, and the venue at the International Conference Hall on the first floor of the Central Library was fully occupied.
President Meng-Ru Shen emphasized the importance of alumni attending the opening ceremony and presented a thank-you plaque to the speakers and alumni guests. President Shen sincerely expressed gratitude, noting that the alumni's strong attachment to the alma mater is a crucial resource for the university. He thanked alumni worldwide for their support. NCKU graduates have been rated as the preferred employees for nine consecutive years, not just because they are obedient, but due to the three key qualities possessed by NCKU graduates: a spirit of teamwork, a high willingness to learn new things, and, most importantly, strong resilience in coping with setbacks. President Shen thanked the alumni for raising NCKU's rankings in various evaluations and urged everyone to continue efforts to make NCKU thrive and shine.
The first speaker of the forum was Mr. Chun-Han Chang, the Director of International Business Development at Bloom Energy, a global leader in fuel cells. His talk, titled "Fuel Cells - The 'Hydrogen' Unbearable by 2050," addressed the widespread use of petrochemical industry and the need for reducing carbon emissions without abandoning petrochemical industries and raw materials. He analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen energy, its substitutability for petrochemical fuels, and the gradient classification of hydrogen. He also shared information about Bloom Energy's hydrogen production technology, applications, and industrial growth.
Next, Dr. Tsung-Ming Lee, Vice President and Director of Materials and Chemical Engineering at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), discussed "Hydrogen - Hydrogen as Fine as a Hair, Net Zero as Mount Tai." He explained the types of hydrogen, such as green, blue, and grey hydrogen, and introduced Japan's development process of hydrogen energy. He also outlined Taiwan's development plan for hydrogen energy, including the supply side, such as imports and processes, and the infrastructure for transportation and storage, with CPC Corporation already beginning to establish hydrogen refueling stations.
Mr. Ling-Chu Chang, General Manager of Tianli Offshore Wind Power, shared insights on "The Opportunities and Challenges of Domestication of Offshore Wind Turbine Blades." He led the audience in understanding the current situation of the wind power generation industry in Taiwan and globally.
While nuclear power provides 10% of global electricity, the radioactive waste generated can last for thousands of years. Mr. Huang Guo-xing, Chief Operating Officer of Fusion Energy, introduced clean nuclear energy generation technology - nuclear fusion.
Mr. Han-Tu Lin, Chief Technology Officer at Taiwan Perovskite Technology, talked about "Perovskite Cells - The Use of Light - The Present and Future of Perovskite Solar Energy." He highlighted that the energy conversion efficiency of perovskite cells has exceeded 25%, making it very attractive. He expressed hope that the government would introduce relevant policies to encourage the development of related industries.
