NCKU's first 'Island Chain of Thought' Lecture features Academician Fan-Sen Wang discussing bottom-up human thought influence.
「Island Chain of Thought」is the first in a series of master lectures hosted by the Taiwan Comprehensive University System (Tai-Chung University) in 2024. The inaugural lecture features Academician Fan-Sen Wang discussing how human thought influences society from the grassroots level.
The "Island Chain of Thought" project, led by the NCKU's Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, is part of a four-year collaborative effort among four universities, including National Chung Hsing University, National Sun Yat-sen University, and National Chung Cheng University. Rooted in the development of "Taiwan Studies," the project aims to explore various aspects of the island's cultural discourse from historical, literary, and ecological perspectives. Under the theme "Island Chain of Thought," the project includes four main components: study groups, master lectures, intensive courses, and a series of knowledge publications. The master lectures feature renowned scholars discussing contemporary issues and research cores in the field of humanities and social sciences.
Academician Fan-Sen Wang emphasized that thought is a way of life and compared the history of thought to a solution of salt in water, indicating that without integration into history, thought remains disjointed. He stressed the importance of historical examination to understand how thought influences and spreads from the grassroots level.
Academician Fan-Sen Wang is a prominent scholar in the field of historical and cultural studies, with expertise ranging from ancient China to modern times. His works have been widely acclaimed, with one of his books being recognized as the most influential research publication in the humanities and social sciences by the National Science Council. In his lecture on "Grassroots Thought History," he explores how thoughts influence society from the bottom up, stimulating critical thinking.
The "Island Chain of Thought" project aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration among universities, promoting academic exchanges and understanding between Taiwan and neighboring countries. Tai-Chung University, established in 2011, comprises four national universities, striving to enhance the effectiveness of educational resources and establish a dynamic and competitive higher education system.
