Multi-Sensory Therapy Classroom — Promoting Sensory Education and Strengthening Parent-Child Interaction
Commissioned by the Social Affairs Bureau of the Tainan City Government, the Multi-Sensory Therapy Classroom has been implemented and led by Professor Ling-Yi Lin, Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Her team of professional occupational therapists has been deeply engaged in this service for over 3 years, continuing to foster meaningful exploration and learning through multi-sensory environments with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration.
To further promote sensory education and strengthen parent-child interaction, the team partnered with YingYing, an online community supporting families of children with developmental challenges, and the Angel Heart Family Social Welfare Foundation – Tainan Office. Together, they co-hosted a special event titled “Multi-Sensory Parent-Child Exploration and Experience Activity” on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This family-centered event featured a range of interactive sensory experiences, not only deepening emotional bonds between parents and children but also enhancing children's social interaction skills through sensory stimulation. By observing and imitating, children were guided to develop appropriate interpersonal behaviors, while play-based sensory activities supported motor coordination and emotional self-regulation.
The multi-sensory experience was designed to engage the visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile senses, inviting participants into a healing, exploratory, and relaxing environment. The activity was divided into 5 immersive zones: Light & Water Reflections – a visual-emotional journey through light and shadow; Sound Resonance – engaging the rhythm of the inner self through music;
Scent Memory Room – combining fragrance and olfactory memory;
Tactile Discovery – exploring sensations from fabric to natural materials; Sensory Art Creation – transforming sensory experiences into creative expression. These zones were thoughtfully curated and facilitated by YingYing’s licensed occupational therapists to provide an empowering, playful, and therapeutic journey for both children and their caregivers.
Each child perceives and processes sensory input in their own unique way. This event, co-organized by the Tainan Social Affairs Bureau, YingYing, and Angel Heart, created a welcoming space where parents and children could co-create simple, sensory-based DIY toys together. YingYing’s therapists also introduced parents to a variety of sensory stimuli and explained the distinctive sensory processing patterns seen in children, aiming to deepen their understanding and responsiveness.
Participants were invited to freely explore the sensory classroom, with therapists on-site to guide parents in observing and interpreting their children’s behaviors and sensory responses. Through well-designed, play-based interactions, families were encouraged to engage more deeply with their children’s rich and fascinating sensory world, while also strengthening their emotional connection.
Distinguished guests attending the event included Deputy Director Chih-Ming Yeh of the Tainan Social Affairs Bureau, Director Yu-Yun Lai of the Accessible Home Center, Director Sui-Hsin Lee of the Angel Heart Family Social Welfare Foundation – Tainan Office, and Professor Ling-Yi Lin, Chair of the NCKU Department of Occupational Therapy and lead coordinator of the Multi-Sensory Therapy Classroom project. Their presence underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in supporting families and promoting inclusive sensory education across communities.
