The King of Golden Melody appears at NCKU's Campus Book Fair, sharing Taiwanese ballads to unveil Taiwan's historical context.
During his speech, Ching-Tzu Su, CEO of Liwen Cultural Enterprise, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Culture for sponsoring the event and to the NCKU Library for its assistance, enabling the presentation of book reading in a more vibrant and diverse manner. Su mentioned that as a daughter of Tainan, she has always admired NCKU, and she was delighted that "Liwen Campus Bookstore" could establish a presence in the university's Wang Hong Building this year, hoping to provide better services to NCKU students.
The NCKU Library pointed out that the spirit of exploration and adventure of the Han people who migrated to Taiwan across the "Blackwater Ditch" 400 years ago is reflected in the lyrics of folk songs. Over the centuries, Taiwan's folk songs have encapsulated the island's historical trajectory, cultural assimilation, enrichment, and impact under different regimes and cultural influences. These songs not only reflect societal changes, everyday life, and the sentiments of different ethnic or social groups but also record Taiwanese people's identity and pride in their land, culture, society, and even the nation.
The NCKU Library emphasized that outdoor theater is a beautiful cultural landscape of Taiwan, with its strong grassroots nature and lively performance style accompanying the people through long and arduous years, comforting countless souls striving for survival. Folk songs and traditional operas exhibit a unique cultural charm, allowing the Taiwanese people to share a common language memory and pride through music.
Folk artists Yuan-Keng You, Ming-Yu Hsieh, and Jun-Jie Wang performed several classic Taiwanese folk songs and traditional operas in a recitation and singing format, sharing the historical background and evolution of the songs, deeply touching the audience with the captivating charm of Taiwanese folk songs and traditional operas.
"Liwen Campus Bookstore" organized the "Campus Book Fair" events at 12 renowned universities nationwide from April to May, with the NCKU event held on the 18th. Apart from the book exhibition and the "Outdoor Stage Recitation and Singing Event" at the NCKU Library, multiple booths were set up at the Prince Hotel Plaza, showcasing selected books, cultural and creative products, themed book exhibitions, and interviews with independent bookstore owners. The Ministry of Culture also provided a limited quantity of free coffee from the Enjoy Reading Coffee Cart, hoping to enrich the NCKU Campus Book Fair experience by combining the aroma of coffee with the scent of books. The organizers hope that through the NCKU Campus Book Fair, they can promote cultural reading and shape a high-quality cultural and artistic atmosphere at NCKU.
The 'Outdoor Stage Recitation and Singing Event' invited, from left to right, traditional opera performer Yuan-Keng You, Golden Melody Taiwanese song king Ming-Yu Hsieh, and Jun-Jie Wang, to perform Taiwanese folk songs and traditional operas in a recitation and singing format, while narrating the historical trajectory of Taiwan behind the music.
Liwen Bookstore's Executive Director Ching-Tzu Su looks forward to this year's establishment of the 'Liwen Campus Bookstore' at NCKU, hoping it will provide better services for the university's students and faculty.
The event was packed, and both students, teachers, and the public present were moved by the captivating charm of Taiwanese folk songs and operas.
