Professor Chen Zhichang, responsible for the course planning, emphasized the importance of face-to-face interactions in an era where technology increasingly isolates people. These real-world experiences, he said, offer a unique, irreplaceable form of learning.
The park director, Zhao-rong Hou, highlighted the park's mission to preserve and promote cultural heritage, inviting volunteers to engage with visitors, especially families, and help instill a strong understanding of cultural assets in children.
The training is aimed at equipping local volunteers, many of whom are older adults passionate about engaging with the community. The program embodies the spirit of “healthy aging,” where older volunteers contribute wisdom and continue to stay active after retirement.
This training course, the second collaboration between NCKU College of Liberal Arts and Longtian CHACHA Cultural Heritage Park, is supported by the Ministry of Education’s University Social Responsibility Project, “Tainan 400 Years: Revitalizing and Upgrading Traditional Industries.” The course includes subjects like "Railroad Culture," "Chia Nan Irrigation," and "Guide Skills," while also addressing current farming concepts in the surrounding areas. Volunteers will be given opportunities to practice their skills, enhancing their tours and engagement with visitors.
NCKU plans to involve international students to deepen volunteers’ experience and allow students to immerse themselves in local culture. This project aims to promote cultural heritage and build connections within the community and beyond.
The 2024 Longtian Cultural and Creative Volunteer Training Program concluded on October 8. In the future, international students from countries like Japan, South Korea, the U.S., and the U.K. will tour the park, enhancing volunteers' practical experience and strengthening international ties.
The Longtian Cultural and Creative Volunteer Training Program offers a diverse and rich curriculum. It covers key exhibitions within the park and incorporates agricultural promotion in the surrounding Guantian District, enhancing the depth and breadth of the volunteer tours.
Many of the volunteers participating in the training are older, yet they remain enthusiastic about learning and engaging with others. In the image, the instructor of the "Guided Tour Techniques" course leads the volunteers in a practical model-based explanation exercise.
The training emphasizes practical exercises, with the 2023 program including post-training tours by park volunteers for Tainan students, allowing volunteers to interact directly with the younger generation.
