On October 10, National Cheng Kung University, the Tainan City Government, and the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Digital Affairs hosted the "NCKU Our Community, Walk Together for Health" event at NCKU in celebration of the Double Ninth Festival. Nearly 200 participants from various communities in the North District and Liujia District of Tainan, ranging in age from 3 to 96 years old, participated in a drum performance and a walk to celebrate National Day and the historical moment of "Tainan 400." Vice President of NCKU, Dr. Yu-Nu Chen, Deputy Director-General of the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Digital Affairs, Ms. Hui-Min Chen, Tainan City Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Shih-Hsi Yin, and the Chairman of the National Development Council, Mr. Chih-Cheng Meng, along with around 500 attendees, joined a walk around the 400-meter-long NCKU Banyan Garden, marking Tainan’s 400th anniversary.
NCKU, in collaboration with local communities, is moving toward a healthy city by integrating technology into walking activities. The event encouraged senior citizens to use a walking app to track their steps and distance, boosting their motivation to exercise and enhancing social interaction within the fitness community. To date, individuals like Mr. Tao and Mr. Guo from the North District, and Mr. Shi from the Rende District, have accumulated over 4 million steps in the past five months, demonstrating the vitality and technological engagement of the elderly generation.
The event was organized by NCKU's Humanities and Social Sciences Center's "USR Accompany 2026 Program" team, in collaboration with the Sports Science and Elderly Health Industry Center. It gathered community members from Longsheng, Ren'ai, Lixing, Chongxing, and Jingpu Villages in the North District and Liujia District, along with NCKU’s elderly volunteer teams, at the university’s West Gate. The event featured performances and a dual-stick walk to showcase the energy of the senior citizens and promote a healthy community lifestyle.
Vice President Yu-Nu Chen of NCKU emphasized that NCKU's faculty and students are deeply committed to community engagement through the USR program and aim to grow together with the city and Taiwan, fulfilling their social responsibility to promote global well-being.
The Tainan City Government's Social Bureau, Health Bureau, Land Administration Bureau, and Finance and Tax Bureau also supported the event, preparing gifts for the participants and contributing to the creation of a senior-friendly, health-conscious city in Tainan.
The event also featured a health-themed digital technology exhibition at the Historical Relics Museum on NCKU’s Guangfu campus. Deputy Director-General Hui-Min Chen from the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Digital Affairs visited to show support. The exhibition displayed products from the Industry-Academia Alliance for AIoT Sports Health Data, jointly planned by the Ministry and NCKU. It also introduced a one-stop resource platform for senior learning and social interaction—"AgePass"—which will launch at the end of October, as well as other all-age technology products, such as children's interactive courses from Crystal Electronics, wearable devices for elderly health promotion from Zhiyou Tech, and online fitness services from Hongying Tech.
