During the university's anniversary celebrations, the NCKU Chinese Opera Research Club proudly presented its 76th Anniversary Production in conjunction with the 93rd Anniversary of NCKU. The performance, titled "Blooming Inside the Wall, Ties Beyond", took place on November 16th at the Phoenix Theater on the Kuang-Fu Campus. The event garnered a full house, with an enthusiastic audience and an atmosphere of excitement. Distinguished guests included Professors Bao-Chun Shen and Wen-Hsien Weng from the Chinese Department, Associate Professor Wei-Xi Ma from the Graduate Institute of Art Studies, Chizuru Inoue from the Department of Foreign Languages, and former advisor Professor Liang Bing-Nan, whose presence added prestige to the event.
This performance was co-hosted as part of the College of Liberal Arts' Higher Education Sprout Program’s United Drama Festival, supported by NCKU's Student Activity Development Division and the Jianguo Engineering Culture and Arts Foundation. Its aim was to bring the art of traditional Kunqu opera to the university community and the public, while promoting the essence of Kunqu and traditional culture in Tainan's historic setting.
The program featured three iconic performances: The Kite Mistake: A Startling Encounter, On the Wall, On the Horse: A Poetic Matchmaker, and the abridged classic The Peony Pavilion.
The event drew an eager crowd, with the theater filling to capacity long before the opening. During the performance, the audience was captivated by the exceptional artistry of the NCKU Chinese Opera Club members, who vividly showcased the elegance and charm of Kunqu.
The opening piece, The Kite Mistake: A Startling Encounter, began with lighthearted humor, delighting the audience with its comedic timing and dynamic acting. On the Wall, On the Horse: A Poetic Matchmaker followed, unfolding a tender love story with nuanced performances that immersed the audience in its emotional depth. Finally, the abridged Peony Pavilion presented the poignant romance of Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang, drawing continuous applause for its captivating portrayal.
After the curtain fell, many audience members expressed their admiration for the performance, praising the artistry and elegance of Kunqu and looking forward to more opportunities to experience such exquisite opera in the future. The club members took their final bows, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the audience and reaffirming their commitment to promoting the legacy of Kunqu.
The club's current advisor, Associate Professor He-Chun Lin from the Chinese Department, led the members in publishing a public statement of thanks. They expressed their deep appreciation for the support of the community and extended apologies to those who were unable to secure seats due to the overwhelming turnout.
