Learning from Multiple Masters, Achieving Mutual Success – The Successful Hosting of the 3rd Philology Academic Conference
The 3rd "Southern Region Philology Academic Conference 2024" was successfully held on December 7 at National Cheng Kung University. Building on the success of the previous two editions, the conference attracted renowned scholars and young researchers from various universities in southern Taiwan. Over 100 faculty and students attended, filling the venue to capacity, demonstrating the research strength and collaborative potential in the field of philology in southern Taiwan. The conference covered a wide range of topics, including philological theory, ancient script research, character evolution, and contemporary Chinese character teaching, offering an academic feast that was both deep and broad.
The organizing committee of the conference included professors from several universities in the southern region, including Professor Jing-Yin Huang from National Chung Cheng University, Professor Li Chen from National Kaohsiung Normal University, Professor Xian-Ren Zheng from National Tainan University, Professor Wan-Yu Gao from National Kaohsiung Normal University, Professor Ming-Jie Ke from Pingtung University, and Professor You-ren Kao from National Cheng Kung University's Department of Chinese. Through their close cooperation, they demonstrated a high degree of collaboration within the southern academic community. Professor Shen Baochun, former chair of the Department of Chinese at National Cheng Kung University, stated in his opening speech, "This is a pure philological discussion, and to have a full venue shows the tremendous research energy of language and philology in southern Taiwan. Characters are an important symbol of culture, and I hope that research can support each other, exchange ideas, and face the challenges of the AI era together." Professor Jing-Yin Huang from National Chung Cheng University also expressed in her speech, "We hope this conference will become an academic platform for teachers and students to fully communicate and showcase research outcomes." The conference not only promoted academic exchange but also laid a solid foundation for cooperation and development among Chinese departments in southern Taiwan.
The conference was held in multiple sessions, with scholars and experts from National Chung Cheng University, National Kaohsiung Normal University, Pingtung University, National Tainan University, and National Cheng Kung University presenting papers. Professor Huang Jingyin from National Chung Cheng University provided an in-depth analysis of the radicals in “Shuowen Jiezi”, offering a new perspective on radical research. Professor Gao Wanyu from National Kaohsiung Normal University delved into Tianhui Yijian · Liao Ma Shu, offering innovative insights based on the text and context. Professor Li Chen from National Kaohsiung Normal University analyzed the characteristics of Chinese characters in Guwen Sishengyun, proposing a new interpretation approach.
The Young Scholars' Forum became a highlight of the conference, with the presentations of graduate students drawing significant attention. Doctoral student Fu-Qi Li from National Chung Cheng University gave an in-depth discussion on the use of "borrowed strokes" in ancient script interpretations. Doctoral student Yi-Jia Xie from National Cheng Kung University provided a detailed analysis of the writing style of An Da Jian and the features of Chu scripts, showcasing the research strength of young scholars. Master's student Zhang Yulun from National Kaohsiung Normal University explored the personal names and titles in Zhao Guo's Jinwen inscriptions. Doctoral student Hu Zhichong from National Cheng Kung University focused on the differences and similarities in educational standard character forms between Taiwan and Hong Kong. Doctoral student Chen Haoyu from National Kaohsiung Normal University analyzed the stroke order of the character "bi" and its significance in character research. Master's student Cheng-Ru Tsai from National Kaohsiung Normal University conducted an in-depth study of the changes in character forms and semantic evolution of the measure word "Tai" / "Tai", demonstrating the future potential of philology research in southern Taiwan through their high-quality papers.
The closing ceremony was hosted by Professor Gao Youren from the Department of Chinese at National Cheng Kung University. He stated, "The successful hosting of the third conference marks a higher level of development in southern Taiwan's philology research. In the future, we hope more young scholars will join the field of philology research, pushing Chinese character studies to new milestones." As an important bridge connecting historical culture and modern research, philology will be increasingly valued in the context of globalization. The successful conclusion of this Southern Region Philology Academic Conference has not only injected new vitality into the academic community in southern Taiwan but also expanded the development space for philological research across Taiwan.
