NCKU Law Department Promotes Legal Education on Elder Rights in the Community – All Are Welcome to Join
As Taiwan enters a super-aged society, the Department of Law at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) continues to focus on issues related to the rights of the elderly. Building on the success of the 2024 collaborative course series “New Perspectives on Elder Rights: Autonomy, Healthcare, Financial Security, and Wealth Inheritance” co-hosted with the Tainan Land Administration Law Association, this year’s efforts are supported by the Ministry of Education’s “Legal Education for Primary, Secondary Schools, and Communities” program. Associate Professor Wan-Ju Yeh of NCKU, in collaboration with the Tainan Land Administration Law Association, is organizing a series of outreach events. Topics include elderly physical and mental care, long-term care systems, guardianship, asset inheritance, tax planning, wills, and the increasingly important issue of elder fraud prevention. Legal services and consultations are also provided on-site by the NCKU Legal Service Club and local community organizations.
The second event was held on April 19 at the Wutiaogang Activity Center in the West Central District of Tainan City, drawing over a hundred senior participants with the support and promotion of Village Chief Lian-zhe Shen. Dr. Wei-Chih Chen from the Department of Gastroenterology at Tainan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare, was invited to share essential knowledge on elderly healthcare, while Chairperson Han-Yu Kuo of the Taiwan Long-Term Care Management Association introduced the long-term care system and relevant subsidy application information. The lectures were closely aligned with the real-life challenges and legal needs of aging faced by local residents, helping seniors prepare for active and healthy aging by addressing their physical, mental, financial, and legal well-being. The event featured lively interactions and received an enthusiastic response from the attendees.
In alignment with the Ministry of Education's encouragement for university law departments to promote community legal education, the Department of Law at NCKU aims to enhance students' social care and service experience through a variety of activities such as lectures, services, and consultations. These efforts are designed to deepen the understanding of legal principles and reduce legal risks for the elderly in local communities, thereby fulfilling the university's social responsibility. Upcoming events include: May 10 at the Tainan City Xinhua District Farmers’ Association with the theme “Elderly Land Use and Inheritance: Don’t Think Elderly People Are Easy to Deceive!” and June 14 at the Yongkang District Fuhua Night Market with the theme “Real Estate Tax Planning for the Elderly.” We welcome interested seniors and community residents to actively participate, with legal knowledge presentations and consultations available on-site.
