NCKU triumphs at 2025 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games:9 Gold, 14 Silver, 20 Bronze, Double Gold in Badminton Team Events
The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) athletic delegation achieved outstanding results at the 2025 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, winning a total of 9 gold, 14 silver, and 20 bronze medals. This year’s gold medal count increased by 3 compared to the previous year, marking a significant improvement in overall performance. Among the top highlights, both the men's and women's badminton school teams captured gold in the general group team competitions. The women’s soft tennis team also won gold in the general team event. In table tennis, both the men's and women's teams clinched gold in the general division doubles. The women’s swimming team triumphed in the general division 4×100-meter freestyle relay, while Chen-Ping Zhu and Yu-Hsiang Wang from the men’s swimming team won silver medals in the 50-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley, respectively, in the open category.
The most remarkable achievement this year was undoubtedly the double gold in team badminton events. Coach Kuo-Cheng Tu of the badminton team noted that the team’s alumni (OB) show exceptional unity and often come to cheer for their junior teammates. He emphasized that participation in university-level sports is not only about competition but also about developing the right mindset and team spirit. He believes that character comes before skill, followed by discipline. The team will do its best to provide resources to help each athlete grow. Growth is a lifelong journey — what players gain goes beyond the court: they become better individuals.
The badminton team members shared their excitement about this historic breakthrough: both the men's and women's teams winning championship titles in the same tournament. "We are truly grateful to Coach Tu for his unwavering dedication — he never misses a single practice and constantly pushes us to improve. We also thank every teammate for investing time and effort toward our common goal," they said. "What’s even more precious is the friendship among teammates. We encourage one another during tough practices and trust each other wholeheartedly during matches. We’re deeply thankful for every team member and alumni who support the team and offer their enthusiastic cheers on-site. The unity of the NCKU badminton team brought us double gold, and we believe we’ll keep moving forward."
Fifth-year student Chin-Hsiu Wei from the Department of Physical Therapy, who won gold in the general mixed 4×400-meter relay in track and field, shared her thoughts on her final appearance at the Games representing NCKU: "My first and last Intercollegiate Athletic Games as an NCKU athlete were both held in Tainan — my hometown — which makes this journey especially meaningful. Tainan holds so many of my track and field memories: the sweat we shed, the mutual encouragement, the physical challenges during training, and the disappointments during competitions — all form vivid snapshots in my memory," she said. "I'm sincerely grateful to all the seniors who have guided and trained me, and to the coaches who have given me opportunities — not only in sports but also academically. With their support, I’ve reached this milestone in my track and field journey by earning this gold medal."
