2025 Tainan City Science Day — NCKU Science Education Center Invites Everyone to Explore Science Together
The opening ceremony featured a hand-crank generator as the symbolic starting point. Representatives from the Tainan City Government Education Bureau, NCKU, and Sinsing Junior High School jointly turned the generator, lighting up a map of Tainan. This symbolized the energy of science education for the 2025 Tainan City Science Day, originating from the NCKU Science Education Center and gradually reaching every corner of Tainan. It illuminated each child’s curiosity and passion for science, nurturing young seedlings of knowledge to grow and thrive in the light.
Kun-Yuan Wang, Deputy Director of the Tainan City Government Education Bureau, expressed his gratitude in his speech for the collaborative efforts that made the event possible. He also thanked NCKU’s College of Science Education Center for its long-term dedication to science popularization, from the “Science Express” program to the “Tainan City Science Day.” He encouraged students to study diligently, build on the efforts of predecessors, seize the moment, and innovate boldly as they work together to usher in Tainan’s next remarkable 400 years.
Professor Hsin-Ying Lee, Associate Dean of the College of Science at NCKU, stated that the “Science Day for All” is not only an important annual science event for students in Tainan but also attracts increasing participation from schools, teachers, students, and parents each year. Through participatory learning, the event not only ignites students’ passion for science but also brings science education closer to everyday life, deeply rooting it in students’ daily experiences. She also expressed sincere gratitude to the many educational partners whose collaborative support made the event a great success. “We hope such events will continue to be passed down, deepen cooperation between universities and junior high schools, and allow the spirit of science to keep sprouting and flourishing in educational settings.”
Professor Hsu-Cheng Hsu, Director of the Science Education Center at NCKU’s College of Science, expressed his hope that through various annual activities, students will come to understand that science is not just questions on a test paper but also the daily surprises they encounter in life. He thanked the National Science and Technology Council, the Tainan City Government, and the NCKU team for their support, which has enabled the Science Day for All event to continuously innovate and deepen its impact.
Principal Ya-Li Cheng of Sinsing Junior High School expressed pride in hosting this year’s opening press conference. She highlighted a major event feature: the NCKU Science Education Center created an “escape room” at Sinsing Junior High, where students engage in cleverly designed, science-rich challenges and puzzles that spark their interest and motivation to learn science. She noted that this learning design is not only fun but also highly educational.
Ya-Li Cheng stated that science education is like a puzzle piece, filling the missing corner of the curriculum vision—“humanities, technology, bilingualism, and internationalization”—specifically in technology practice and interdisciplinary learning. She thanked everyone for their participation, which made this puzzle more complete and enriched the overall learning picture.
This year’s theme, “Science Is All Around Us,” featured four interactive experiments: “Sugar Solution Optical Rotation,” “Blue Print,” “Floating and Sinking,” and “Inelastic Collision.” Incorporating smartphone operation elements, these activities enabled students to understand physics and chemistry principles in innovative ways. The highlight was the brand-new science escape room at Sinsing Junior High called “Adventures with Duck Duck in a Strange World.” Guided by the event mascot, “Science Duck,” students entered a carefully crafted imaginative world where, through puzzles, reasoning, and hands-on challenges, they subtly learned various scientific concepts—truly embodying the spirit of “learning through play.”
