NCKU Launched Frontier Quantum Science and Technology Course with Support from Distinguished Alumnus He-Cheng Li
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)’s Department of Physics has launched a new course, “Frontier Quantum Science and Technology,” to advance forward-looking education and interdisciplinary research. The course is jointly taught by experts from the Department of Physics, the Center for Quantum Frontiers of Research & Technology, and Academia Sinica’s Southern Campus, and is funded by a five-year donation from alumnus He-Cheng Li, recipient of NCKU’s 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award (Mechanical Engineering Class of 1968) and chairman of Global Fiberoptics Inc.
Alumnus Li emphasized that quantum technology will be a key driver of future industries, spanning computing, communications, and sensing. By supporting his alma mater, he hopes to give more students early exposure to this transformative field and help strengthen Taiwan’s international competitiveness.
Before the first class began, alumnus Li personally visited the campus to encourage the students, sharing insights on technological trends and life lessons, and urging them to seize learning opportunities and explore the cutting edge of science. Professor Yueh-Nan Chen, Chair of the Department of Physics, who also teaches the course, presented alumnus Li with a small gift to express heartfelt thanks, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
Quantum technology has been developing rapidly in recent years, particularly in quantum computing and quantum communication, and is expected to usher in a “second quantum revolution” that could fundamentally change human technological life. To meet this emerging challenge, the course uses innovative methods and tools such as open-source quantum software and cloud-based quantum computers, with thematic modules covering fundamental quantum mechanics, superconducting qubits, entangled photons, and quantum communication.
The response has been overwhelming: all 100 available spots were filled shortly after registration opened, and limited classroom resources made it impossible to add more seats, reflecting the strong enthusiasm among students and faculty for quantum studies.
By integrating leading domestic scholars and the latest research, the course provides an exceptional platform for students to engage with frontier quantum science and technology. NCKU aims to leverage this program to deepen industry–academia collaboration and to cultivate quantum professionals with both global vision and innovative capability.
The Department of Physics noted that alumnus Li’s long-standing commitment to cutting-edge science and his generous support not only demonstrate the enduring bond between alumni and their alma mater but also inject fresh energy into Taiwan’s quantum education. Moving forward, the department and the Frontier Quantum Technology Research Center will continue advancing quantum research and instruction in partnership with industry, helping to build Taiwan’s core competitiveness in quantum technology.

Before the course officially began, alumnus He-Cheng Li made a special appearance to deliver an encouraging speech, offering words of motivation and support to the younger students.

Professor Yueh-Nan Chen, Chair of the Department of Physics, presented alumnus He-Cheng Li with a commemorative stamp issued for the centennial of quantum physics, expressing the department’s gratitude for his visit and encouragement to the students.

After the announcement of the “Frontier Quantum Science and Technology” course, an overwhelming number of students rushed to enroll, and the 100 available spots were filled in a very short time.
