Executive Vice President Shyy-Woei Chang noted that between 2020 and 2025, the two universities co-authored 74 research papers, primarily in the fields of Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science. EVP Chang also highlighted the solid foundation for academic and research exchange established by the formal signing of a university-level Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in May 2024 and expressed his hopes to enhance future cooperation during the meeting.
In his address, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tam thanked NCKU for its hospitality, noting that the mutual trust built through the Presidents’ Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents’ Forum) provides a strong basis for deepening cooperation in talent cultivation and faculty exchange. He highlighted VNU-HCM’s mission to develop Ho Chi Minh City as a smart city and establish corporate research centers, expressing a keen interest in learning from NCKU’s innovation models. Together, both universities aim to advance regional development through shared strategic initiatives and professional exchange.
Chair Professor Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs at NCKU, provided an introduction to NCKU, highlighting that NCKU ranks in the top 1% globally across 16 academic fields. He emphasized NCKU’s strong research and development capacity, driven by its close ties with the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), various enterprises, and national institutes. Prof. Hsieh also mentioned that in July 2025, two NCKU professors conducted short-term teaching and exchanges at VNU-HCM, receiving high acclaim. He invited VNU-HCM students to apply for research internships or pursue graduate degrees at NCKU, particularly in key areas such as Quantum Technology and Cybersecurity, noting that scholarship opportunities are available.
Prof. Shyh-Hau Wang, Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, represented the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) to highlight its research focus on AI, communications, and software development. He noted that the college offers numerous English-taught courses and maintains close ties with Vietnam. Following his visit to VNU-HCM’s University of Technology and International University in June, where he hosted bilateral workshops, Prof. Wang expressed his deep impression of the local culture and his enthusiasm for future cooperation.
Prof. Shin-Jie Lee, Director of the Teaching and Learning Technology Division, Computer and Network Center at NCKU, shared NCKU’s efforts in developing an AI platform and smart campus by optimizing university-wide data. Prof. Tzuen-Hsi Huang, Deputy Director of Integrated Circuit Design at Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM), joined the discussion for the idea of NCKU professors to conduct semiconductor summer courses in Vietnam. The meeting concluded with vibrant interactions, followed by a site visit to Dong-Ning Dormitory, where the delegation gained firsthand insights into NCKU’s smart campus management.
