Associate Professor Wan-Ju Yeh of the Department of Law Discusses the Legal Controversy of Digital Internet

Synergy Correlation

"Many problems occur and are solved on the Internet, but they have to be dealt with back in the real world." Associate professor of the Department of Law at NCKU Wan-Ru Yeh, said that law issues on the Internet are inseparable from life, and the virtual world on the Internet has become an important part of life experience along with the real world. "In the online space, it is our task to decide how to deal with people and respect law information." Associate Professor Yeh urged students to be aware of their own words and behaviors as online citizens, to develop the ability to think critically, and to think before making judgments before sharing online information.

The Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences at NCKU held a general education seminar on May 9, 2023 on "The Legal Minefield of the Digital Internet: What College Students Should Know", inviting Associate Professor of the Department of Law at NCKU, Wan-Ru Yeh, to share with students the relationship between the digital Internet and the law, as well as relevant life cases."What are the issues that college students need to know about the participation behavior of Internet use?" At the beginning of the lecture, Ms. Yeh raised a question to guide students' thinking, and proposed six topics for the lecture: digital Internet legal disputes, online copyright, online false information, cyber bullying, online sexual violence, and personal data protection and information security.

She used casual videos to help students understand the situation, guided them through questions, and analyzed complex legal disputes step by step, using rich real-life examples to make students easily understand difficult legal terms. She said, "In the face of online media, it is important to keep thinking critically to identify the truth and avoid the spread of untruths." Taking the Yilan Scallion Pancake case as an example, Yeh taught her students to use the 5W1H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) to clarify the truth. In the case, the owner of the scallion pancake did not find the bill on the floor when she received it, and thought that the customer was underpaid. On the contrary, the customer's friend thought that the owner had deliberately thrown the money on the floor. However, was that really the truth? Did the customer's friend ever check with the owner?Although the owner later clarified that this was not the case, negative comments have long been established on the Internet.

During the speech, some students asked what they should pay attention to when excerpting or editing other people's videos for showing at club activities. She replied that first of all, it is necessary to check whether the source of the video is a public institution video or a private creation, and then to pay attention to whether the video is allowed to be used by others, and to carefully check the way and scope of authorization. "There are many legal responsibilities behind an action on the Internet, so be cautious when spreading rumors or generating information." Yeh reminds everyone that Internet resources are easy to obtain, but they must be carefully checked for authenticity and sources, and they must be careful when sharing information so that they do not become the ones who spread misinformation.

Chun-Li Tsai, director of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences(CHASS), said in his speech that the CHASS Talk series organized by CHASS contains three topics: life education, beauty education and law education, and law is the focus of today's lecture and is an important concept for students. Nowadays, everyone has access to the Internet, and many phenomena and issues on the Internet are closely related to life, such as intellectual property rights on the Internet, cyberbullying and sexual violence. He said, "Any dispute over words and opinions on the Internet can create problems, and everyone will face them." Every student may face Internet-related disputes, so it is important for students to learn Internet skills, and I believe that students will benefit a lot from Associate Professor Yeh's speech.
