"NCKU's College of Medicine, Department of Nursing, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the psychiatric department of the affiliated hospital recently collaborated to organize the 'Gather Wisdom and Fun: Mental Health x Smart Technology' high school camp. Through a problem-oriented learning approach, the camp aimed to lead teenagers in self-observation of their psychological states, enhance their ability to provide self-help and assistance to others in psychological emergencies, and guide participants in creating smart mental health technology care action plans suitable for adolescents.
The camp included students from Tainan Girls' High School, Deguang High School, Houpi High School, and other schools in the Tainan area. The curriculum was conducted using a STEM interdisciplinary education cooperation model, integrating science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and mental health.
A student from Deguang High School, Chen, mentioned that participating in the camp taught her how to adjust her mood and absorb a lot of knowledge about mental health. Another student from Deguang High School, Zhang, stated that the camp's teaching of "psychological first aid" knowledge and operations was very practical and could be applied to classmates in need. Yu, a student from Tainan Girls' High School, expressed her joy in collaborating with the team to create designs for smart psychological health technology applications. She not only made new friends but also learned communication and presentation skills. The three students unanimously agreed that if similar camps were held again, they would definitely recommend them to friends.
Professor Ching-Lan Lin from the Department of Nursing at NCKU pointed out that suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents aged 15 to 24. Adolescents are prone to psychological crises and are a high-risk group for developing mental illnesses. The purpose of organizing high school camps is to enhance adolescents' mental health literacy and use smart technology and interdisciplinary cooperation to increase learning motivation, thereby achieving the goal of preventing psychological crises.
Professor Chung-Hsien Wu from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering mentioned that high school students, through group practical activities, not only learned about concepts such as mental health care using smart technology but also experienced the importance of interdisciplinary communication and teamwork. This is essential preparation for future smart technology talent.
Professor Po-See Chen from the psychiatric department of NCKU Hospital and the Institute of Behavioral Medicine emphasized that the camp allowed high school students to freely ideate and design mental health smart care plans suitable for adolescents. It could stimulate their creativity and problem-solving abilities and increase their concern for and sensitivity to mental health issues.
As the invited student project judge, Chairman Chiu-Hsiang Wu from Guangyuan Resources Technology believes that the "Mental Health x Smart Technology" project, which promotes mental health and interdisciplinary talent development, is a forward-looking action with social value that will have a positive impact on the younger generation.
The Tainan City Government Health Bureau attaches great importance to adolescent mental health and has been organizing a series of activities to promote campus mental health. For example, on April 7, a meeting of principals from local colleges and universities was held, and on April 21 and 28, seminars on crisis response to campus mental health were jointly organized with the Education Bureau and the National Suicide Prevention Center, with Mayor Wei-Cher Huang delivering a speech to encourage attendees. The "Gather Wisdom and Fun: Mental Health x Smart Technology" high school camp held by NCKU responds to the Health Bureau's concern for adolescent mental health issues and calls on everyone to take action together to safeguard the mental health of students on campus."
