The university's "Special Admissions" results have been released, and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has admitted a student with exceptional achievements in 3D drawing. This student, Cheng-Yu Zhang, from Changhua Hemei Experimental School, participated in the Tainan City Government's digital heritage preservation project two years ago. He assisted in digitizing several significant historical sites and authorized the use of the multiplayer online game (Gather Town) map he created for the Cultural Affairs Bureau, as part of the Tainan 400th Anniversary celebrations. Zhang aspires to actively enrich his professional skills in various fields and enhance his cultural knowledge after entering NCKU, to contribute more to the preservation of historical sites.
Due to a lack of social skills, Cheng-Yu Zhang found the world too loud and terrifying and used to immerse himself in his own world wearing headphones, finding it difficult to respond to the outside world and having little hope for the future, rarely leaving his home. However, a turning point came in ninth grade when he began to explore 3D drawing.
Through 3D drawing software, Zhang discovered that the images in his mind could be visualized. This ignited his passion for creation and gradually made him realize that "observing this society is very interesting." Through 3D drawing, he could quickly familiarize himself with the surrounding objects and accurately record them, helping him to embrace the world again and sparking his willingness to communicate with the outside world.
Driven by the desire to learn more about 3D drawing software, Zhang actively sought opportunities outside his comfort zone. He successfully obtained an internship with the PTWA (Program the World Association) Learning Center through Changhua Hemei Experimental High School, where he spent nearly a year commuting between Changhua and Tainan by train each week. During this internship, he was responsible for digitizing eight temples in the central and western districts of Tainan using 3D drawing software, which will be used for digital heritage preservation. The results of his work will be publicly announced by the Tainan City Government during the Tainan 400th Anniversary celebrations. For students like Zhang, traveling alone by train and working with strangers was extremely challenging, but he overcame each obstacle one by one.
Cheng-Yu Zhang looks forward to the freedom to choose cross-disciplinary studies in NCKU's interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program. He has already made preliminary plans for his studies at NCKU. Since the core curriculum of the interdisciplinary program includes interactive game development, he also plans to study urban design, industrial design, and history outside of the program. He hopes to absorb and enrich his professional knowledge and humanistic literacy in NCKU's diverse academic environment, and to preserve Taiwan's local scenery and historical sites digitally.
NCKU's interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program aims to cultivate high-tech innovators and future leaders with a global perspective, professional competence, lifelong learning abilities, and social responsibility. With comprehensive counseling measures in place, the program welcomes students like Cheng-Yu Zhang who do not give up on their dreams and strive to demonstrate their ideals through hard work. First-year students in the interdisciplinary program have the advantage of delaying their choice of major, allowing them to explore interdisciplinary learning interests and develop their abilities. When students enter their second year, they will be distributed to various departments across the university according to the selection and distribution regulations.
