President Meng-Ru Shen of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) warmly welcomed the delegation from Malaysia, expressing in his speech that the greatest strength of NCKU comes from its alumni. He shared his experience of visiting Malaysia in 2022 and meeting with NCKU alumni, who spoke fondly of their time at the university and highlighted how their education at NCKU significantly contributed to their career development. During his visit to Malaysia again last year (2023), President Shen was impressed by the outstanding performance of Malaysian students in NCKU's science, math, and business competitions.
This year (2024), to further cultivate the international talent required for the next generation, NCKU signed a memorandum of understanding for international talent cultivation with Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. in Penang, Malaysia, on September 13. The agreement was signed by President Shen and ASE Vice Presidents Jennifer Yuen and Wen-Zhong Zhu, expressing both parties' willingness to collaborate. The partnership focuses on providing internships and job assistance for NCKU’s international students, aiming to equip them with a solid foundation of academic and practical skills, preparing them to meet global competition and changes while promoting the development of the semiconductor industry.
President Shen emphasized that NCKU has a strong tradition, excellent faculty, and advanced research facilities, making it one of the two comprehensive universities in Taiwan. Students studying at NCKU can benefit from a diverse and multi-faceted learning environment. Through his interactions with NCKU alumni and students in Malaysia, President Shen was deeply moved by their spirit of "knowing gratitude, expressing gratitude, and repaying gratitude," which exemplifies the unity and strength of NCKU's overseas alumni community.
This year, NCKU launched the **"Malaysian High School Outstanding Student Admission Recommendation Agreement"** for the first time, with the hope of attracting more Chinese students to study at NCKU and experience the solid and enriching academic environment the university offers.
Vice President Hong-Chen Chen of NCKU stated that this was the first time NCKU has invited Malaysian Chinese Independent High Schools and the Kuala Lumpur Taiwan School to visit the university, allowing them to engage directly with Malaysian students studying at NCKU and gather first-hand information and experiences. Through this visit and interaction, the principals and teachers can take these insights back to Malaysia and further share and encourage their students to consider studying at NCKU.
Vice President Chen emphasized that NCKU has always valued its relationship with Malaysia, noting that Malaysian alumni have long established a reputable international brand in the field of science and math competitions. Many students use their competition results to apply to universities. He further highlighted that, with Taiwan’s current national plan for balanced regional development, the southern part of Taiwan has gained increasing attention, with NCKU playing a leading role in this growth.
Through the signing of the school alliance cooperation agreement, the goal is to create a positive cycle where overseas Chinese students come to Taiwan to study, benefiting from the valuable experiences offered in Taiwan. Whether they choose to stay in Taiwan or return to Malaysia after graduation, this collaboration will enable them to continue developing and contributing to both regions.
Director of International Affairs, Sun-Yuan Hsieh, introduced NCKU's history, campus landscape, and the university's responsibilities to the visiting delegation. He highlighted NCKU's outstanding achievements in research capacity and sustainable development, as reflected in high rankings in numerous prestigious evaluations. Additionally, NCKU has excelled in industry-academia collaborations. Hsieh pointed out that NCKU's six key research centers (Hierarchical Green-Energy Materials Research Center, the Medical Device Innovation Center, Center for Quantum Frontiers of Research & Technology, Center of Applied Nanomedicine , the Orchid Research and Development Center, International Center for the Scientific Development of Shrimp Aquaculture) have all received significant national funding and support.
He emphasized that NCKU not only actively explores local culture but also collaborates with top international universities, striving to create a borderless campus and providing students with diverse and practical learning resources.
Following the opening forum, a special Malaysian student exchange session was organized, where Malaysian students shared their experiences studying and living at NCKU. One student from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Xu, shared with the visiting principals and teachers about the various scholarships they received and their experience studying abroad in Austria as an exchange student. This allowed the delegation to gain insight into the challenges students may face and helped foster cultural exchange and understanding. The exchange session provided a valuable platform for meaningful dialogue, promoting better interaction and stronger connections.
The delegation of principals from Malaysian Chinese Independent High Schools and the Kuala Lumpur Taiwan School, in addition to visiting the NCKU campus and exploring its teaching facilities, had the opportunity to experience the beautiful atmosphere and abundant academic resources that NCKU offers. Through interactive exchanges, they gained a deeper understanding of the advantages of studying at NCKU. Furthermore, the delegation will take part in a tour of Tainan’s rich cultural and artistic scene, allowing them to experience the city's diverse character. It is hoped that the visiting principals will bring back their positive experiences of NCKU and Tainan, encouraging more outstanding students from Malaysia to choose NCKU for their studies.
