On the afternoon of October 16, Mr.Romain Huret, President of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France, along with Leopoldo Iribarren, Vice President for International Relations, and Mr.Yu-Lin Chen, Secretary from the Department of International and Cross-Strait Education, Ministry of Education, visited National Cheng Kung University for preliminary discussions on potential collaborations. Key attendees from NCKU included Executive Vice President Hong-Chen Chen; Prof. Shin-Mei Kao, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts; Prof. Hsin-Chih Chen, Vice Dean of the College of Social Sciences; Prof. En-Yu Huang, Deputy Director of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, and Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of the International Relations Division.

Executive Vice President Hong-Chen Chen began the meeting by commending EHESS for its outstanding achievements in the humanities and social sciences, and expressed great hope that this initial dialogue would mark the beginning of a fruitful collaboration. President Huret of EHESS also noted that although EHESS is a relatively young institution, it has a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences and is highly internationalized. He expressed great anticipation for future exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions. Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin highlighted that while NCKU is recognized as a national leader in engineering, it also ranks second in Taiwan for its humanities and social sciences programs, demonstrating its strengths across multiple disciplines.

The meeting continued with presentations from representatives of NCKU’s College of Liberal Arts, College of Social Sciences, and the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, who gave concise introductions to their respective faculties. These included the College of Liberal Arts' robust Chinese language programs and international exchanges, the interdisciplinary courses offered by the College of Social Sciences, and the cross-disciplinary research initiatives of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences. Both parties expressed enthusiasm for potential areas of collaboration, including Chinese language exchanges, Southeast Asian studies, Taiwan studies, elder care, and archaeological topics. The two institutions will take the first step in their collaboration by signing a university-level comprehensive cooperation and student exchange agreement. In the future, the partnership may further strengthen through student exchanges and research collaboration by signing a dual doctoral degree program agreement.

École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is a prestigious French institution established in 1947.
