NCKU 93rd Anniversary: "Sweet Dreams" Themed Book Exhibition, Aiming for Everyone to Have a "Good Night's Sleep"
Sleep is closely related to physical and mental health, as well as overall well-being. However, with the rapid changes in society, getting a good night's sleep has become a challenge for many people. In response, National Cheng Kung University is promoting a happy campus, and in celebration of its 93rd anniversary, the university's main library has organized a themed exhibition and series of activities called "Sweet Dreams," focusing on the importance of sleep quality in modern life. This initiative aims to raise awareness about self-care and health.
The "Sweet Dreams" book exhibition and series of activities will run from November 4 to December 31. In addition to showcasing approximately 200 books related to sleep, the exhibition features interactive elements such as a "Sleep Testing Room," "Sleep Disorder Fundraising," and "Scan to Win a Prize," adding a fun twist to the event. There will also be informative sleep knowledge sharing sessions, including visual aids like "The Sleep Cycle" chart, as well as a "Sweet Dreams Q & A" segment with tips on nap duration and caffeine intake. A special feature of the exhibition is a bed set up for visitors to try lying down on.
The opening ceremony took place on the first floor of the main library on November 4. Vice President Yuh-Neu Chen spoke about the importance of sleep for mental and physical well-being, noting that modern technological advances and faster-paced lifestyles have made it difficult for people to relax. She emphasized that sleep disorders have become a widespread issue in many advanced nations, and that this exhibition and its related events aim to provide valuable information and tools to help improve sleep quality.
Library Director Tzu-Fun Fu pointed out that the phrase "Eat well, sleep well, and laugh often" reflects the balance of body, mind, and spirit. She noted that everyone, regardless of age, faces different sleep challenges. For example, babies sleep soundly, but often cry before falling asleep, which demonstrates how mysterious and fascinating sleep can be. The "Sweet Dreams" series will feature exciting lectures and movie screenings, encouraging people to learn more and improve their sleep quality.
Studies show that sleep deprivation is affecting younger age groups, and while there are many sleep aids and products available, poor sleep quality is often due to personal habits rather than external factors. The "Sweet Dreams" exhibition will also feature three lectures on sleep, presented by scholars and industry experts who will explore modern sleep habits and ways to improve sleep quality.
The first lecture, "A Good Night's Sleep," will be held on November 4 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, presented by Wen-Gui Ling, the head of the Sleep Medicine Center at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital. The second lecture, titled "The Body Loves the Way You Sleep," will be presented by Professor Jian-Ming Yang from the Department of Psychology at National Chengchi University on November 15, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The third lecture, "How to Overcome Insomnia," will be held on November 22 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, presented by Dr. Tsung-Hua Lu from the Department of Psychiatry at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital. All lectures will take place in the multi-functional reading area on the east side of the first floor of the library.
Additionally, every Wednesday at 6:30 PM, a movie related to sleep will be screened in the large audiovisual room on the basement level of the library. The films include:
