Vice Rector of Johannes Kepler University Linz Visits NCKU to Discuss Renewal and Deepening of Future Academic Cooperation
On the morning of December 4, 2024, Vice Rector Alberta Bonanni of Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), Austria, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) accompanied by Secretary Li-Tian Xu from the Ministry of Education’s Department of International and Cross-Strait Education. The meeting aimed to renew the memorandum of understanding and student exchange agreements between the two universities, as well as further discuss strengthening bilateral academic exchanges and cooperation. The meeting was hosted by Vice President Hong-Chen Chen of NCKU, with attendees including Director of the International Office, Sun-Yuan Hsieh; Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, S. Felix Wu; Vice Chair of the International Affairs Committee of the College of Medicine, Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung; Head of the International Relations Section, Chia-Hsiang Lin.
During the bilateral report, Director Hsieh introduced the NCKU Chinese Language Center’s 8-week intensive Chinese language program. Vice President Chen also mentioned that NCKU arranges host families to provide international students with an immersive language learning experience to rapidly improve their Chinese proficiency. Dean Wu of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science welcomed JKU students to Taiwan for exchange and expressed hopes to deepen research collaboration and faculty exchanges. Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung of the College of Medicine mentioned that the college is actively expanding collaborations with European universities and is looking forward to future cooperation between the two medical schools.
Vice Rector Bonanni highlighted the close alignment of NCKU’s academic fields with JKU’s four main faculties: Engineering and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Business, Social Sciences and Economics, and Law, and expressed anticipation for further collaboration. She also mentioned that JKU is currently integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with quantum computing and medical technologies, aligning with Taiwan’s technological development trends. On the topic of internationalization, Vice Rector Bonanni noted that JKU has 19% international students, showcasing its highly international character. She also pointed out that her own expertise lies in semiconductor and quantum materials research, providing a potential opportunity for future collaborative research between the two universities.
