Bringing the Symphony Orchestra to Campus: Artist Yu-Jung Chen Solo Exhibition "Infinite Whisper" Debuts at NCKU
Artist Chen shared that his sister is an NCKU alumnus, and for Tainan locals, NCKU is a special place filled with shared youthful memories. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at NCKU and collaborate with the Art Center to curate this event. The exhibition theme, "Infinite Whisper," delves into the connections between humans and AI. Artist Chen pointed out that humanity has grappled with the impact of technological and mechanical advancements since 1899, as highlighted in Paul Gauguin’s artwork, "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" In the era of AI, Artist Chen invites audiences to consider how humans can adapt to the waves of new technology.
Specializing in creating with sound and visuals, Artist Chen aims to make the intangible tangible, showcasing the beauty and emotions conveyed through sound. In "Infinite Whisper," he employs AI technology to analyze and visualize sound data, offering a medium for new dialogues between humans and AI. His work encourages viewers to imagine how sound, as one of humanity’s earliest communication tools, evolves through language, text, and programming.
Artist Chen emphasized that humanity and AI can coexist and thrive together rather than resist each other. The exhibition features three technological art pieces displayed in an open, transparent space. Initially concerned about sound interference between the works and how to manage echo, Artist Chen found inspiration in the relationship between AI and society, where coexistence and harmony are key. By balancing the sounds of each piece, the works perform like a symphony orchestra, each playing its part while coexisting harmoniously.
Born in Tainan in 1989, Yu-Jung Chen earned a master’s degree in music composition from National Chiao Tung University and is currently enrolled Ph.D. in Art Creation and Theory from Tainan National University of Art. His work focuses on the interplay between space, sound, and the body, using performance art to express emotions and atmosphere. Artist Chen has received numerous grants from Taiwan’s National Culture and Arts Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and has participated in various artist residencies and exhibitions worldwide. He is also the Artistic Director of I/R Sound-space Art Studio, specializing in interdisciplinary creations such as composition, multimedia, experimental music, and installation art.
"Infinite Whisper" showcases three notable works:
1. Alter Spectrogram
Using AI deep learning models, this piece simulates the sounds of string musicians and blends them with Artist Chen's cello recordings, creating an improvised dialogue between AI and human musicians. The sound resonance is visualized through 18 resonance speakers on-site, inviting visitors to reflect on the relationship between sound and daily life. The piece questions whether AI, as a digital creative tool, can replace real musicians or coexist with them.
2. Pixel-Text
This work utilizes large language learning models to enhance recursive delays in language processing, continuously generating new character structures.
3. The Revisit
Using "cosmos" as a keyword, this piece employs computational algorithms and image generation to create a transformation from microscopic to macroscopic scales, producing distinct changes in images through iterative processes.
At the opening ceremony, NCKU Senior Vice President Ping-Sheng Wu emphasized how the 21st century, marked by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, has rapidly transformed global economies and societies through emerging technologies such as AI, big data, IoT, 5G, machine learning, and biotechnology. Generative AI gained widespread attention in 2022 with the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, showcasing creative applications like text and image generation.
Senior Vice President Ping-Sheng Wu noted that the challenge for contemporary artists lies in mastering these powerful tools. Artist Chen’s exhibition demonstrates how AI can facilitate new artistic dialogues, exploring the relationships between “humanizing objects” (Turing) and “objectifying humans.”
