NCKU Launches Core Research Programs to Drive Interdisciplinary Innovation and Cultivate Top Talent
To promote interdisciplinary research, enhance international collaboration, and advance applied technologies, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has launched three "Core Research Programs" this year, encouraging faculty and researchers to apply and invigorate academic research. This initiative encompasses diverse fields such as sustainability, innovation, and industry-academia collaboration, with a strong emphasis on inviting international faculty to foster a global research environment. Among the programs, the "Sustainability Advancement Program" (Elite Program) offers a maximum annual grant of NT$3 million, aiming to support outstanding research teams in achieving breakthrough results in sustainability, innovation, and industry-academia cooperation. Additionally, NCKU has partnered with the Biomedical Institute of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to drive innovation and commercialization in the biomedical and medical device sectors, contributing to advancements in healthcare and practical medical technology development.
On the morning of January 21, 2025, an information session for the research proposal call was held at the International Conference Hall on the Kuang-Fu Campus. NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen and Vice President Hong-Chen Chen attended and delivered speeches, encouraging faculty and researchers to actively apply. During the session, NCKU's Vice President for Research and Development Chuan-Pu Liu and Deputy Vice President for Research and Development Wen-Tai Chiu presented the details of the call for proposals and conducted a Q&A session. Additionally, six interdisciplinary research teams from the fields of science and engineering, biomedical sciences, and humanities and social sciences shared their research experiences. The briefing covered key information such as the eligibility criteria, project timelines, and evaluation points for the three research programs. The presentation slides were also made available for online download for review. (presentation slides)
NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen stated that the core of a university is academic excellence. However, to elevate further, international interdisciplinary innovation and collaboration are essential. NCKU is actively moving toward this goal. In the past two years, the university has vigorously promoted interdisciplinary cooperation, yielding significant results. Last year, the university achieved a historic high in industry-academia collaboration outcomes. Additionally, this year, the humanities and social sciences field will also see national-level breakthroughs. These outstanding achievements demonstrate the fruitful results brought about by the university’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. To continue deepening research innovation, NCKU has launched three core research programs, providing Seed Money to support faculty and researchers in various research endeavors. The initiative aims to enhance the university's research capacity and hopes to see research teams grow and break through, ultimately competing for larger research projects.
NCKU’s core research programs for the 114th academic year include three key initiatives: the "Sustainability Advancement Program," the "Foreign Faculty Career Development Program," and the "ITRI Collaborative Research Program." Faculty, researchers, foreign faculty members, and clinical teachers from the School of Medicine are encouraged to actively apply. Each program has unique eligibility criteria and team composition requirements. The "Sustainability Advancement Program" emphasizes cross-college and interdisciplinary collaboration. The "Foreign Faculty Career Development Program" encourages foreign faculty to deepen their engagement with NCKU and foster international cooperation. The "ITRI Collaborative Research Program" focuses on industry-academia collaboration in the biomedical field. Each program has its own set of funding items and application procedures. For more detailed information, please refer to the "Latest News / Program Proposals / Internal Programs" section on the Office of Research and Development’s website. Faculty members seeking team matching opportunities can also email their project name, keywords, desired team member fields, and departments to the academic development team by January 31.
