2023 SOFT POWER - 8 Female Leader Share Life Stories
2023 SOFT POWER Female Leadership Talk on ESG was held by National Cheng Kung University, The European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT), and the team of PechaKucha Tainan, focusing on the issue of sustainable development. Eight outstanding female leaders were invited to deliver speeches in the PechaKucha 20x20 way, which uses 20 slides within 400 seconds (20 seconds per slide) to talk about their amazing life stories and encourage the audience to live their fullest lives.
The event was opened by Jennifer Wang, Managing Director of TUV Rheinland, who stated that she is the environmentalist in her family and has been actively working on issues such as environmental sustainability and renewable energy. With more than 20 years of overseas multinational experience in her professional field, in various management positions, and as the first female managing director of the company, she also shared her case studies on how to participate in organizational reengineering, cultural diversity and how to enhance the vitality of corporate innovation. She also encouraged the audience, stating "Studying is a way to change your life; you can become the person you want to be through education!"
Josephine Lo, chairman of Nestlé Taiwan, was the second speaker who delivered the speech. As the first Taiwanese chairman of Nestlé in its 40 years of operation in Taiwan, she shared her views on the world as a mother. She hoped that sustainability will come first in every possible process of change and encouraged students to "All problems have a solution that works best; the real problem is whether you have found the best solution! Don't think that you have little power, as long as you are willing to change and find your place, change will occur and will continue to happen.”
Next, Irene Feng, Executive Counselor of Fresenius Kidney Care & Medical Care Group, shared her journey from being a front-line nurse practitioner to working in the foreign medical industry and said that what she pursues in life is truth, kindness, and beauty. "Beauty to me is not just about appearance; it's about intelligence, poise, and confidence," she has encouraged herself for more than 30 years. She believes that women leaders must lead by example, no matter at work or at home!
Fresenius Medical Care is the world's largest dialysis provider with a history of over 100 years. Since the establishment of the Taiwan branch in 1998, the company has introduced professional services to upgrade the dialysis industry in Taiwan and has been working in Taiwan for more than 20 years to bring ESG into the daily work to provide safe, warm, and quality care to dialysis patients.
Chen Shu-Mei, who changed her position from academia to the Director of Bureau of Land Administration, Tainan City Gov., shared her experiences through a remote audio and presentation. She has been out of the academic comfort zone for more than 20 years and has been in this position since 2018. She said, "Many people do not know what the Bureau of Land Administration does, but showing the public what we are doing is part of our duty, and I want to realize it." As a result, she set her goals step by step, and through the process of land development and optimization, she has been realizing the ideas she has accumulated in her academic research step by step, hoping to give back to society what she has learned.
Lin Shien, who is actively involved in the field of women's empowerment and sustainability and is currently a member of the Taichung City Youth Advisory Board, shared the perspective of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). She hopes that through the youth advisory platform, she can convert international experience into practical action and contribute her own knowledge and power.
Lu Yan, the Vice President of Tongtai Machine & Tool Co., Ltd, is the third-generation member of her family specializing in finance and marketing management. She joined the company in 2011 after returning from Japan. With her professional marketing skills and diversified background, she has injected new life into the "old Tongtai." Vice President Yan Lu shared her perspective on machinery from different marketing angles across the medical field. "Whether you are a woman or a man, the most important trait is bravery. You must try and take on the challenge of ‘If not me, who? If not now, when?'. Using her ability to integrate the "5M" field through various connections, she creates new sparks in her work and life.
Rebecca Lee, Vice President of the South Region of Silks Hotel Group and General Manager of Silks Place Tainan, shared the brand's characteristics that link the local environment and culture, innovation, and heritage. She introduced the cuisine and stories behind the combination of Tainan's Beimen Jing Zhai Jiao Tile Paved Salt Fields and Dongshan Coffee. Vice President Lee was inspired by Cheng Kung University's Tainan course, and the hotel has launched related trips and dishes that combine local creativity. They have also collaborated with Cheng Kung University to launch "MenTAUR" to introduce people to Tainan's daily life and discover the small blessings of life through a flexible approach, leading the team to break through difficulties with creativity.
NCKU President Su Huey-Jen delivered the final speech emotionally. "Commitment is essential, and when you make a commitment, you have to face it. I am grateful to have been with you all these eight years. Even if I leave my position in the future, all that I have done here will be the nourishment of the University. I am fortunate to be a part of its history and to have embarked on this journey with all my colleagues to work towards sustainable development."
President Su emphasized that in the midst of a comprehensive smart transformation, every change is crucial and implies civic responsibility for the next generation. Contributing to the future through knowledge and technology is the most important part, especially in the most challenging time for the world. NCKU stands together to bring technology into all aspects of food, clothing, housing, and transportation. Echoing the theme of the opening ceremony, she said, "The university carries the hope that society will see a better future after education."
The issue of global development and sustainability is a significant challenge for future generations. In line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, President Su of National Cheng Kung University invited the participants to sign the 2023 Women Leaders' Statement on Sustainability, hoping that by supporting women's actions, we can bring better economic growth to the world and encourage women to become a sustainable force in changing the world.
Additionally, the event featured booths showcasing friendly farming and natural farming methods, such as Jankombu, which cultivates Taiwan's native mountain tea, Pai Li Pai Li Taiwan ice cream, and Caf'e Duet coffee, among others. The lively atmosphere attracted many attendees.
The event was held in the green corridor of the Daxin Art Garden. The Daxin Art Garden Campus, which had not been open to the public as an art and culture salon for over two years, unexpectedly became a topic of discussion. In the past, the campus was always shrouded in mystery due to its strict gates. However, now not only has the original 1933 wall of the three official buildings of the new campus been preserved, but the surrounding landscape has also been beautified with greenery, decorated with walking corridors and rich layers of art and cultural activities. This was done with the hope of continuing the existing history and green axis of the NCKU campus, allowing the humanities and arts to flourish in NCKU.
